A new era of strategic partnership between Uzbekistan and the United States

During the official visit of the President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev to the United States, Senior Bureau Official for the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs Alice Wells and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan Abdulaziz Kamilov signed two agreements in the field of education and culture.

The first Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) recognizes the launch of a program based in Uzbekistan that will support partnerships between the United States universities and higher education institutions in Central Asia over the next three years.

The second memorandum expands funding for English language programs throughout Uzbekistan for introduction of textbooks for students, journalists and professionals, as well as programs on strengthening capacity of Uzbek English language professionals and online training for teachers and students.

These agreements mark the beginning of a new era of the United States – Uzbekistan cooperation in education and are symbols of a broad and deepening partnership between the two countries.

On May 17, President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev visited the United States Department of State. At the meeting with the U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, the sides discussed issues of further strengthening bilateral relations, intensification of ties between foreign ministries.

President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev met with the United States Secretary of Defense James N. Mattis during his official visit to the United States.

President of the Republic of Uzbekistan was solemnly met in Pentagon.

A guard of honor was lined up in honor of the highest-ranking guest. National anthems of the two countries have sounded.

The Head of the state, thanking the American side for the long-term and fruitful cooperation, noted that as a result of negotiations with President Donald Trump, relations between the two countries have risen to a new level.

Based on the principles of openness and good neighborliness in our foreign policy, the Defense doctrine of Uzbekistan was upgraded to further strengthen the sovereignty and independence of our country. The structure and tasks of military districts have been revised, military schools have been reformed. Uzbekistan is interested in sharing experience, military-technical cooperation, and interaction in defense and security with the United States of America, Shavkat Mirziyoyev said.

At the meeting, main attention was paid to security, military and military-technical cooperation. Current aspects of countering modern challenges and threats to security and stability in the region, as well as a peaceful settlement of the situation in Afghanistan, were discussed.

President Shavkat Mirziyoyev met with congressmen led by Trent Kelly, Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Mississippi’s First District, in the United States Capitol. This was reported by the Press Service of the President.

At the meeting, issues of legal support for increasingly developing Uzbekistan – American relations, strengthening inter-parliamentary ties were discussed.

President Shavkat Mirziyoyev visited Word Bank Headquarters in Washington, DC. President of the World Bank Group Jim Yong Kim welcomed the Head of Uzbekistan. This was reported by the Press Service of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

Cooperation between Uzbekistan and World Bank covers such spheres as energy, irrigation and modernization of utilities sector, development of transport and social infrastructure, processing agricultural products. The joint program of cooperation until 2020 includes 27 important projects worth 4 billion dollars.

At the meeting, agreements were signed in such fields as development of horticulture, improvement of the system of emergency medical care, increasing the energy efficiency of industrial enterprises, modernization of heating network, financial advisory services.

New prospective projects were discussed and proposals were made on further expansion of cooperation.

Thereupon, the official visit of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev to the United States of America has ended.
