H.E. Mr. Tapugao Falefou, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Tuvalu, who was invited by the Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries, and Small Island Developing States (OHRLLS) to participate in the High-Level Experts Group Meeting.

During this significant event, Ambassador Falefou delivered a keynote address on the vital topic of “Achieving Scale and Sustainability” in the establishment of an Online University dedicated to serving the Least Developed Countries (LDCs).

This afternoon, the Ambassador of Tuvalu to the United Nations, H.E. Mr Tapugao Falefou, and the Ambassador of Germany H.E. Mr Thomas Zahneisen witnessed a new contribution agreement, marking Germany’s commitment of EUR 1 million to the Rising Nations Initiative through the Global Centre for Climate Mobility (GCCM).

This contribution will support the creation of a digital repository to safeguard Tuvalu’s culture, history, and heritage, an essential part of protecting our identity and sovereignty as a Pacific atoll nation on the frontlines of climate change.

Today at the United Nations Headquarters, the Chair of the Pacific Small Island Developing States (PSIDS), H.E. Mr. Tapugao Falefou, Permanent Representative of Tuvalu to the UN, delivered the joint PSIDS statement.

The statement highlighted the value of South-South Cooperation in delivering practical, locally driven solutions for SIDS, from advancing regional resilience initiatives to improving digital access in low-connectivity environments.

The Permanent Representative of Tuvalu, in the capacity of PSIDS Chair, partnered with Project Starling to host a private breakfast meeting at the Commonwealth Joint Office in New York on 15 May 2025.

The meeting brought together PSIDS Permanent Representatives and advisers for an open and forward-looking exchange on Pacific priorities ahead of the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD4) in Seville.

The discussion served as an important moment to stay informed, aligned, and prepared for the critical weeks ahead.
 

Conclusion of the First Session of the BBNJ Preparatory Commission in New York

At the conclusion of the first session of the BBNJ Preparatory Commission, PSIDS delegates gathered for a team photo following two weeks of sustained and coordinated engagement.

Represented by multiple Pacific nations, PSIDS delivered detailed statements across nearly all agenda items, including finance, capacity-building, governance issues, benefit-sharing, and the clearing house mechanism.
