PH, Elected as Chair of the 63rd session of the Committee for Programme and Coordination

UNITED NATIONS, NEW YORK, 27 April 2023 – According to Ambassador Antonio M. Lagdameo, Permanent Representative of the Philippines to the United Nations in New York, the Philippines was elected by acclamation as Chair of the United Nations Committee for Programme and Coordination (CPC) during the Committee’s Organizational session held today. The Philippines will assume its chairmanship during the Committee’s 63rd session, which will be held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on 30 May - 30 June 2023. The chairmanship of the Philippines will be represented by Director Adela Dondonilla of the Commission on Audit. She will be assisted by the officials and staff of the Philippine Mission.

The CPC is the main subsidiary organ of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and the General Assembly for planning, programming and coordination in the United Nations. It is tasked to examine the Secretary General’s work programme as a whole, giving particular focus on programme changes arising from the decisions adopted by intergovernmental organs and conferences, or those that may be suggested by the Secretary General.

Ambassador Lagdameo said, “the Philippines’ chairmanship is a testament to the country’s ability in taking part in various leadership roles of the organization and its related bodies.” It will allow the country to oversee and steer the negotiations, which examine holistically the Secretary General’s work programme vis-à-vis its budgetary implications and corresponding mandates for effective implementation.

The CPC assists the ECOSOC in the performance of its coordination functions within the UN system by coordinating the activities and programmes of its agencies in order to enable the Council to effectively perform its functions as coordinator and ensure that the work programmes of the organization and its agencies are compatible and mutually complementary.

There are currently thirty-four (34) Member States represented in the Committee. These are Armenia, Belarus, Belgium, Botswana, Brazil, Cameroon, Chile, China, Comoros, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Eritrea, Eswatini, France, Germany, India, Iran, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Liberia, Mali, Malta, Mauritania, Pakistan, Paraguay, the Philippines, Poland, Republic of Korea, Russian Federation, UK, US and Uruguay.

There are six (6) Observer States, namely, Switzerland, Australia, Kazakhstan, Myanmar, Kenya, Syrian Arab Republic. EU is also represented as Observer.-END
