FOREIGN MINISTER MAKES CLIMATE CHANGE A PRIORITY AT THE CHINA-CELAC FORUM

Senator the Honourable Kamina Johnson Smith, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, attended the Second Ministerial Meeting of the China-CELAC Forum, held in Santiago, Chile on 22nd January 2018, under the theme “CELAC-China: Working for more development, innovation and cooperation for our peoples”. The Meeting was designed to fine-tune the cooperation agenda for the period 2019 to 2021 between the People’s Republic of China and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC).

FOREIGN MINISTER APPOINTS NEW HIGH COMMISSIONER TO NIGERIA

Senator the Honourable Kamina Johnson Smith, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, announces the appointment of Mr. Harold Malcolm, JP as High Commissioner Designate to Nigeria.

Mr. Malcolm, who will assume duty in February, is a trained lawyer having graduated with First Class Honours from the Norman Manley Law School in 2008. As a Chevening Scholar, he attended the London School of Economics and Political Science from 2009-2010, specialising in Human Rights Law.

Trade and Invest Jamaica (JAMPRO), in collaboration with the Jamaica Manufacturers’ Association (JMA) and the Jamaica Exporters’ Association (JEA) will be hosting Expo Jamaica, 19th – 22nd April 2018 in Kingston, Jamaica. The 2018 staging will be held under the theme, “Expo Jamaica: Advancing Breakthroughs,” and will see over 2000 authentic Jamaican products on display.

 

Minister Johnson Smith confirms Jamaicans amongst casualties of Bronx fire, expresses condolences to families affected

Jamaica’s Foreign Minister today, (Saturday, December 30) confirms that four persons of Jamaican descent are included amongst the fatalities of the fire that gutted an apartment complex in the Bronx, New York on Thursday.

Jamaica joins the international community in commemorating Human Rights Day 2017.  This year, Human Rights Day marks the beginning of a year-long campaign celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948.  The Declaration recognizes the inherent dignity and the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family, regardless of race, colour, creed, sex, or national origin.

74 RECEIVE PM YOUTH AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE

Seventy-four young people who have made outstanding contribution in various areas were presented with the Prime Minister’s Youth Awards for Excellence, during a ceremony held last evening (December 6) on the lawns of the Office of the Prime Minister.

Awards were presented in the categories of Academics, Agriculture, Arts and Culture, Entrepreneurship, Environmental Protection, Innovation in Science and Technology, International Achievement, Journalism, Leadership, Sports, and Youth Development, and there was a special Jamaica 55 award.

REPORT HIGHLIGHTS SIGNIFICANT COSTS OF TRAUMA CARE

Health Minister, Dr. the Hon. Christopher Tufton, has welcomed a report that highlights the significant costs associated with treating trauma-related cases in the public health system.

The Cost of Care report, which was launched on Wednesday (December 6) at the University of the West Indies (UWI) regional headquarters in Mona, St. Andrew, shows that the direct and indirect medical cost of treating injuries at public facilities resulting from violence, road traffic crashes and attempted suicides in 2014 totalled $12.6 billion.
