TWO NEW TRUCKS FOR FIRE BRIGADE

KINGSTON, June 14 (JIS):                                                            

The Jamaica Fire Brigade (JFB) is to receive two new Rosenbauer fire trucks, valued at US$1.15 million.

Minister of Local Government and Community Development, Hon. Desmond McKenzie, signed the contract for the purchase, at his Hagley Park Road offices in Kingston, on June 13.

Mr.  McKenzie said the Government is resolute in ensuring that the fleet of the JFB is improved as well as the physical condition under which the men and women of the service have to operate islandwide.

LEGISLATIVE PRODUCTION SYSTEM AND DRAFTING MANUAL LAUNCHED

The process by which the country’s laws are drafted is to be significantly improved with the introduction of the Legislative Production Management System and Legislative Drafting Manual.

Justice Minister, Hon. Delroy Chuck, launched the software system and manual at his Constant Spring Road offices in St. Andrew on June 8.

They were developed under the Justice Undertakings for Social Transformation (JUST) Programme, which is funded by the Canadian Government and implemented by the Justice Reform Implementation Unit (JRIU) in the Ministry.

JAMAICANS URGED TO LEARN CPR

The Heart Foundation of Jamaica (HFJ) is stressing the need for Jamaicans to be trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), as having such knowledge could result in them saving a life.

 Director of Emergency Cardiac Care at the HFJ, Dr. Hugh Wong, said that everyone should have CPR skills, which, he noted, are easily learnt.

“The person whose life you save is likely to be someone close, like a spouse, a neighbour or a colleague,” he pointed out while addressing a JIS Think Tank on Tuesday (June 13).

CaPRI LAUNCHES STUDY ON VALUE OF THE DIASPORA

A study to examine the value of the diaspora to Jamaica’s development will be launched on Jamaica Diaspora Day (June 16), which is celebrated annually in Jamaica and abroad.

Some of the results will be revealed at the Jamaica 55 Diaspora Conference to be held in July.

ESTABLISHMENT OF NATIONAL IDENTIFICATION SYSTEM A PRIORITY – PM

            Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, says the Government is making the establishment of the National Identification System (NIDS) a priority.

            He said the system will have a “positive transformational effect” on the country and serve to improve the lives of Jamaicans.

            “It will support the ease of doing business by impacting positively on security-related programmes, while promoting financial and social inclusion, as well as compliance with tax laws,” he noted.

NEW CURRICULUM TO IMPROVE METHODS OF TEACHING

Minister of Education, Youth and Information, Senator the Hon. Ruel Reid, says the new National Standards Curriculum (NSC) will improve methods of teaching, particularly for boys.

            Mr. Reid was responding to a question on ways to improve the performance of boys in schools, during the Rotary Club of St. Andrew luncheon meeting at the Hotel Four Season in St. Andrew, on June 13.

MINISTRY AND SECURITY FORCES DEVISING STRATEGIES TO REDUCE CRIME

The Ministry of National Security and the security forces are actively devising strategies to address the increase in the levels of crime affecting the island over the last few weeks.

          This was stated by Portfolio Minister, Hon. Robert Montague, in the House of Representatives on Tuesday (June 13).

          Mr. Montague said there has been an increase in police operations islandwide, but more so in the parishes of Hanover and Clarendon.

MSME AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP POLICY TO BE MADE MORE EFFECTIVE

            A review of the Micro, Small and Medium-size Enterprise (MSME) and Entrepreneurship Policy is being completed by the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries, with a view to making it more effective.

            First adopted by Parliament in 2013, the Policy serves as a comprehensive framework for the implementation of strategies to support the growth and development of the MSME sector.

TAX INCENTIVE BIG BOOST FOR COMPANIES ON JSE JUNIOR MARKET

Companies listed on the Jamaica Stock Exchange (JSE) Junior Market are reaping dividends from the accompanying Government tax incentive, which is also generating benefits for the country.

The regime sees the firms benefiting from a 10-year tax break. For the first five years, entities are exempt from paying corporate income tax, but are required to pay 50 per cent of their statutory obligations for the remaining period.
