"On the occasion of the 54th Anniversary of our Independence, I extend to members of the staff of the Permanent Mission of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana to the United Nations and to members of our G-77 Coordination Team congratulations and best wishes.

Unfortunately, the public health measures in place to mitigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and reduce the risk of exposure do not allow for in-person gatherings and the commemorative activities to which we are accustomed. Nevertheless, even as we are confined to our homes, it is a good occasion to pause and reflect on where we have come as a nation over these past fifty-four years and where we are heading. The current challenges should not cloud our recognition that much has been achieved in consolidating our political independence and laying the foundations for the economic independence to which all Guyanese aspire and which is now within our grasp with unity of purpose and with the contribution of all sectors of our society. There are exciting times ahead for our country and I'm glad that the Mission and its staff have a role to play in building that future and in transforming our common aspirations into reality.

Happy Independence Day."
