The Honourable Dr. Ashni Singh, Senior Minister with responsibility for Finance of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana, today, delivered an intervention during the General Debate of the 2022 ECOSOC Forum on Financing for Sustainable Development Follow up (FFD) which is being convened at the United Nations (UN) Headquarters in New York.
Dr. Singh, in laying the foundation for his substantive contributions, reminded the General Assembly of the ongoing crippling economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the most vulnerable states while alluding to the ongoing war which is compounding the global economic crisis.
The Hon. Minister underscored the Government of Guyana's intent to strengthen the nation's economic resilience, during this time of difficulty, by removing the most pressing impediments to economic diversification and competitiveness. The Honourable Minister made specific reference to Guyana’s leading role in solidifying the CARICOM Agri-Food Systems Agenda, an ambitious initiative to enhance regional food security, engineered to address poverty eradication and sustainable development in the region.
Further, Dr. Singh reiterated Guyana’s support for vulnerability to be measured rigorously, beyond the use of GDP, to access concessional financing, specifically for Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
