Our Mission to the World

Welcome to the website of the Permanent Mission of Costa Rica to the United Nations. Our main purpose is to reflect the position and voice of a country that aims to have an active participation within the United Nations. Among the main objectives of Costa Rican diplomacy is to assist in building the necessary worldwide consensus needed to strengthen international law and uphold universal values related to peace and security, democracy and the promotion and respect of human rights. Costa Rica´s active role should be interpreted as certifying proof of its adhesion to the process of strengthening multilateralism, an element inherently linked to security and the only acceptable way for the country to offer a coherent and effective response to international threats and challenges.

Among these efforts, it is worth highlighting Costa Rica´s membership in the Security Council during the periods of 1974 – 1975, 1997 – 1998 and 2008 – 2009, and its chairmanship of the Group of 77 and China (1996). The participation of Costa Rica in the General Assembly and its recent membership at the Security Council have been crucial to focus priorities in a wide range of topics such as disarmament and non-proliferation; justice, combating impunity and terrorism; protection of civilians and the tripartite cooperation amongst the Security Council, the Secretariat and the troop and police contributing countries in Peacekeeping Operations; respect for human rights and all issues related to humanitarian affairs; the comprehensive reform to the Security Council and its work methods; the promotion of sustainable development and the pursuit of a global agreement in climate change; and the transference of technologies as a requisite for development.

Costa Rica, as one of the founding members of the United Nations, contributes with its work to the General Assembly as a whole as well as through its six committees. Through this process, the Mission complies with strategic goals and priorities of the foreign policies of the country. Following the country´s diplomatic priorities, the Permanent Mission of Costa Rica maintains an active participation in regional groups such as the Latin-American and the Caribbean Group (GRULAC), the Rio Group (G Rio), the Group of 77 and China and the Central American Integration System (SICA). Likewise, Costa Rica participates in informal groups and coalitions in which, by sharing points of views and common positions, better working strategies and proposals for action are achieved.

We hope that the information found on this site will serve to better understand the initiatives and priorities undertaken by this Mission.
