SECURITY COUNCIL

Resolution of the peace building architecture Review

27 April 2016

Intervention

Mr President,

Today, the Security Council has unanimously adopted this Resolution which constitutes a new era for peacebuilding in the United Nations system.

By introducing the concept of sustaining peace, this Resolution expresses the determination of the Security Council to address the root causes of conflicts, assist the Parties to conflicts to end hostilities, ensure reconciliation and recognize the importance of promoting the three pillars of the United Nations - Peace and Security, Development and Human Rights - in support of Member States efforts in the building peaceful societies.

I would like to thank Ambassador Cynthia Bird, Permanent Representative of Australia who has been appointed with me, as Co-Facilitator of the intergovernmental phase of the peacebuilding review process, and thank the Members of the Security Council for entrusting us with this task.

I would also like to thank the Advisory Group of Experts coordinated by Ambassador Gert Rosenthal.

Finally, I would like to thank the experts of the Member States, who worked hard and with great sense of commitment and responsibility, in order to present us this Resolution; and to the Secretariat and the Peacebuilding Support Office for the invaluable support extended to us.

We can just hope that in 5 years, when the Peacebuilding Architecture established by this Resolution will be reviewed, the assessment will conclude that this Resolution has given a meaningful contribution to peacebuilding and to a better and more peaceful world.

Thank you very much
