Angola reiterates appeal for the lifting of the arms embargo on CAR

NEW YORK- Foreign Affairs Minister Téte António called on the Security council on wednesday , October 20, for the lifting of the arms embargo on the central Africa Republic, in light of the positive progresses achieved on the ground.

Minister Téte António who was addressing the UN Security Council debate on the situation on the great Lakes Region, recalled  the appeal made by angolan President João Lourenço in his capacity as acting chairman  of the ICGLR, during the 8802nd Meeting of the Security council, held on 23 June this year.

He stressed that Angola's request remains valid, believing that the assessment  and determination of maintaining the embargo in light of the positive progress achieved on the ground by the Government of the Central Africa Republic rests with the United Nations Security Council(UNSC).

The Head of Angola´s diplomacy acknowledged  that the Great Lakes Region has been plagued by  conflict and political instability for decades and pointed out ilicit exploitation and trade of natural resources as one of the key drivers  of such  instability.

Thus, he asured that  "Angola will continue its efforts under the chairmanship of the ICGRL, to consolidate Peace, Conflict Prevention and Resolution in the Great Lakes , working in close cooperation, consultation and cooperation with the stakeholders to promote a shared vision in addressing the complex challenges to peace, security and development in the great lakes Region".
