UNITED NATIONS HEADQUARTERS, NY 29 September 2012 Citing the special ties between the two countries and peoples, the Philippines and Thailand reaffirmed the importance of their bilateral relations and agreed to continue identifying ways of widening and deepening areas of cooperation. During a meeting at the sidelines of the 67 th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Secretary of Foreign Affairs Albert del Rosario and Minister of Foreign Affairs Surapong Tovichakchaikul discussed in particular preparations for the 5 th Philippines-Thailand Joint Commission for Bilateral Cooperation (JCBC) which the Philippines will host in January 2013. In a statement after the meeting, Secretary del Rosario pointed out the “importance of the JCBC as a mechanism for reviewing the progress of bilateral initiatives and activities and to discuss new areas of cooperation.” “The JCBC provides us an important venue to discuss ways of further raising our relations with Thailand and we look forward to the Philippine hosting of the JCBC early next year,” Secretary del Rosario added. In the meeting, Secretary del Rosario and Minister Tovichakchaikul also discussed relevant regional issues, particularly those concerning ASEAN, of which the Philippines and Thailand are founding members. Secretary del Rosario also took the opportunity to express appreciation for the Royal Thai Government’s timely assistance for the victims of the southwest monsoon flooding in the Philippines in August.
