PHL RECEIVES FULL SUPPORT OF UNITED NATIONS GENERAL ASSEMBLY PRESIDENT FOR EFFORTS ON PEACEFUL SETTLEMENT OF DISPUTES

 

 The Philippines’ Secretary of Foreign Affairs Albert del Rosario engages Vuk Jeremic, President of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), in an active discussion of issues of concern to the UNGA, including the peaceful settlement of disputes during a meeting at the sidelines of the 67 th session of the UNGA. Secretary del Rosario heads the Philippine delegation to the General Assembly this year. END

 

UNITED NATIONS HEADQUARTERS, NY 28 September 2012 The Philippines’ efforts to advance the peaceful settlement of international disputes at the United Nations gained further momentum as the President of the UN General Assembly expressed full support for what he described as “a timely theme’ for the General Assembly.

At a meeting with Secretary of Foreign Affairs Albert del Rosario here, the President of the 67 th session of the United Nations General Assembly Vuk Jeremic underscored his firm expression of “utmost attentiveness and energy to the Philippine initiatives at the United Nations on the peaceful settlement of disputes.”

Secretary del Rosario welcomed President Jeremic’s statement, saying that “this will further draw attention to the duties and obligations of States to settle their disputes in a peaceful manner as enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations and in international law.”

Secretary del Rosario pointed out that President Jeremic’s choice of the theme "Adjustment or settlement of international disputes or situations by peaceful means" for the 67 th session of the UN General Assembly “reflects a keen awareness of crucial issues that confronts our world today and a deep and principled understanding of the way forward” and provides an opportunity for “a synergy of actions by stakeholders to advance the peaceful settlement of disputes at the United Nations.”

“The Philippines is confident that under the able leadership of President Jeremic, he will be able to steer the General Assembly towards the achievement of the goals we all share as responsible members of the international community and we are encouraged by the clarity of President Jeremic’s vision for the General Assembly,” said Secretary del Rosario.

In his address at the opening of the 67 th session of the UN General Assembly, President Jeremic outlined the main areas of focus for this year’s session, with the overarching theme being the peaceful settlement of international disputes.

"I hope this framework will usefully serve the noble cause of preventing gathering conflicts and resolving existing ones," said President Jeremic. END
