PRESS RELEASE NYPM 15-2011 28 FEBRUARY 2011 PH CONCLUDES SUCCESSFUL CHAIRMANSHIP OF SPECIAL COMMITTEE ON THE CHARTER OF THE UNITED NATIONS AND ON THE STRENGTHENING OF THE ROLE OF THE ORGANIZATION
28 February 2011 United Nations, New York Ambassador Carlos D. Sorreta, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Philippines to the United Nations, presides over the 260th meeting of the Special Committee on the Charter of the United Nations and on the Strengthening of the Role of the Organization. During Ambassador Sorreta’s Chairmanship in 2010, the Special Committee held its 257 th 258 th and 259 th meetings and submitted the report to the Secretary General that discussed among others the question of the maintenance of international peace and security. Ambassador Sorreta was succeeded by Ambassador Maria Rubiales de Chamorro, the Permanent Representative of Nicaragua to the United Nations. Ambassador Rubiales de Chamorro expressed gratitude for Ambassador Soretta’s leadership during his Chairmanship which contributed positively to the effective work of the Special Committee. The Philippines’ Chairmanship of the Special Committee brings to the fore the legacy of and continuing important role played by the Philippines in ensuring that the United Nations remains efficient, effective, responsive and dynamic. The Special Committee on the Charter of the United Nations and on the Strengthening of the Role of the Organization was established in 1975 from a merger of a Philippine initiative – championed by General Carlos P. Romulo - and a Romanian item. END
