UN CELEBRATION OF INTERNATIONAL MOTHER LANGUAGE DAY SHOWCASES FILIPINO MUSIC; EDSA PEOPLE POWER LEGACY

25 February 2011 United Nations, New York Members of the San Lorenzo Ruiz choir opened the commemoration of the International Mother Language Day on 21 February 2011 with a special rendition of Filipino songs. Other performances from Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka and India featured songs and traditional and contemporary poems in the performers’ mother language at the Bangladesh Permanent Mission. The critically-acclaimed choir’s performance of “Rosas Pandan” and “Isang Dugo, Isang Lahi at Isang Musika” was described by Bangladesh Permanent Representative Dr. A.K. Abdul Momen as “beautiful,” “wonderful” and “moving.” Prior to the San Lorenzo Ruiz Choir’s performance, a brief introduction on the Philippines’ linguistic diversity was made, along with a reference to the Philippines’ own commemoration of the 25 th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution which is said to have provided inspiration for the song, “Isang Dugo, Isang Lahi, Isang Musika.” International Mother Language Day was proclaimed by the General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in November 1999 and has been observed every year since February 2000 to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism.
