115 FILIPINO PEACEKEEPERS IN LIBERIA AWARDED BY UN; PHILIPPINES LAUDED ANEW FOR “DEMONSTRATED CONTRIBUTIONS” TO GLOBAL PEACE AND SECURITY
20 July 2010 New York, NY – The United Nations honored 115 Filipino peacekeepers serving in Liberia with the conferment of medals and lauded the Philippines anew for the country’s commitment to advance global peace and security.
The Philippine Mission to the United Nations reported that UN Special Representative of the Secretary General (SRSG) Ellen Margrethe Loj awarded the 115 Filipino peacekeepers in colorful and meaningful ceremonies in Monrovia and extolled the Government of the Philippines for its continued support to peace and security throughout the world, particularly for contributing troops to serve with the UN Mission in Liberia (UNMIL).
In her remarks, SRSG Loj said “The commitment of the Philippines to peace operations has been amply demonstrated,” adding that “since sending its Expeditionary Forces to Korea in 1950, the country has continued to serve the cause of peace, security and justice in other complex environments… and sometimes with painful costs.”
In a statement, Philippine Permanent Representative to the United Nations Libran Cabactulan welcomed the United Nations’ conferment of awards saying, the peacekeeping medals were “fitting and well-deserved symbols of the Filipino people and nation’s commitment to secure the world.”
As of June 2010, the Philippines has more than 1,000 peacekeepers serving UN missions in Liberia, Haiti, Darfur, Golan Heights, Sudan, Timor Leste and Cote d’Iviore.
Only recently, the United Nations paid tribute to the four Filipino peacekeepers who were among those killed in the earthquake that struck Haiti in January this year.
SRSG Loj also recognized Contingent Commander Lt. Col. Royland M. Orquia for his exemplary leadership and for inspiring the Filipino peacekeepers to “serve with dedication and responsibility.” END
