PHOTO RELEASE: PHILIPPINES CO-HOSTS INTL CONFAB ON TRAFFICKING IN WOMEN AND GIRLS
MEETING THE CHALLENGE TOGETHER. Ambassador Hilario G. Davide Jr., Permanent Representative of the Philippines to the United Nations, presides over the afternoon session of the international conference on "Trafficking in Women and Girls: Meeting the Challenge Together" organized by the Philippines and Belarus, the UN Office of Drugs and Crime and the NGO Vital Voices Global Partnership in New York on 05 March 2007. The conference, which was participated in by close to 200 participants from various governments, international organizations and agencies and non-governmental organizations, was opened by key high-level representatives including H.E. Sheikha Haya Rashed Al-Khalifa, President of the 61st UN General Assembly, H.E. Dalius Cekuolis, President of the Economic and Social Council and Dr. Asha-Rose Migiro, Deputy Secretary-General. The conference is part of a process in the General Assembly which aims to stress the importance of a gender-based and human rights approach to the issue of trafficking and the need to address gaps in the coordination of efforts to combat the problem.
