Panel Discussion on “The Implementation of the Women, Peace and Security Agenda: Harmonizing the High-Level Review Processes”

The Permanent Mission of the United Arab Emirates to the United Nations invites you to attend a panel of discussion, in partnership with UN Women and the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security (GIWPS), entitled “The Implementation of the Women, Peace and Security Agenda: Harmonizing the High-Level Review Processes.”

The event will be held on Thursday, 28 May 2015, Conference Room 1, UN Headquarters, from 3:00pm to 5:00pm

This panel discussion is the sixth and last installment in a Panel Series on Women, Peace and Security, launched in partnership with UN Women in their capacity as the Secretariat of the Global Study on the Implementation of Security Council resolution 1325 (2000), and GIWPS.

In preparation of 2015 High Level Review to assess progress in implementing UNSCR 1325, the discussion seek to demonstrate how including gender perspectives might address the challenges facing the world today, such as the rise in violent extremism, the increase in protracted humanitarian crises, the upsurge of non-state actors, and ever-more politically complex conflicts. The panelists will discuss key areas in the implementation of the WPS agenda, including financing, senior leadership, political will, and capacity and speak to these implementation challenges in relation to the findings of each Panel.

This event will feature numerous distinguished speakers. H.E. Lana Zaki Nusseibeh, Permanent Representative of the United Arab Emirates, will provide welcoming remarks, Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson will provide the opening address, Honorable Lieutenant General Roméo Dallaire, President, Lieutenant-General Roméo Dallaire Foundation; Founder, The Roméo Dallaire Child Soldiers Initiative, will deliver a keynote address and Ambassador Melanne Verveer, Executive Director, Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security, will moderate the discussion.

·         Mr. Youssef Mahmoud, Senior Adviser, International Peace Institute

·         Ms. Saras Menon, Member of the Advisory Group of Experts on the Peacebuilding Architecture

·         Mr. Yannick Glemarec, Assistant Secretary-General, Deputy Executive Director of Policy and Programme, UN Women
