At a high-level side event during UNGA80 , Prime Minister Hon. Feleti Penitala Teo underscored the urgency of climate accountability for small island developing states. “The accelerating climate crisis is not an abstract concern; it is the lived reality of our daily existence,” he affirmed.

The event highlighted the recent ITLOS Advisory Opinion confirming greenhouse gas emissions as a form of pollution and affirming binding obligations for states. Prime Minister Teo called this affirmation a lifeline for Tuvalu and stressed the importance of turning these legal opinions into enforceable global action.

The Prime Minister was joined by Her Excellency Dr. Esealofa Apinelu, Tuvalu High Commissioner in Fiji, and His Excellency Dr. Tapugao Falefou, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Tuvalu to the United Nations. Together, they reinforced Tuvalu’s unwavering commitment to advancing climate justice through the Commission of Small Island States on Climate Change and International Law (COSIS).

Tuvalu, through its leadership of COSIS, continues to be a leading voice in advancing international law for climate justice.
