The event consisted of the hoisting of the national flag, singing of the national anthem, and observance of a two-minute silence for those who have sacrificed their lives for the motherland, following which the members of the clergy representing the four major religions of Sri Lanka conducted religious rites to commemorate this special occasion.

Addressing the gathering, Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the United Nations Ambassador Rohan Perera described the political transition that took place exactly one year ago as one of the critical junctures of the contemporary Sri Lankan political history, which has re-established democracy, good governance and the rule of law in the country.

He recalled the positive response that this political transition has received from the Secretary-General and senior officials of the United Nations and the diplomatic community based in New York. Ambassador Perera reaffirmed that the government of Sri Lanka would continue to make every endeavour to ensure good governance and the rule of law.

In this regard, Ambassador Rohan Perera quoted from the statement by the Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, in which the Secretary-General congratulated the President, the Government and the people of Sri Lanka on the first year of the country’s political transition, and committed his support to Sri Lanka’s reform initiatives to secure long-term peace, prosperity and respect for human rights, including through financial support from the Peacebuilding Fund and technical assistance.
