Sri Lanka actively participated at the Sixtieth Commission for the Status of Women (CSW) held at the United Nations in New York, with high-level engagement from the government as well as by civil society. This included three side events co-hosted by the Sri Lanka Permanent Mission to New York.
President Maithripala Sirisena, in a message to His Imperial Majesty Emperor Akihito, expressed his deepest condolences and sympathies to the victims of the earthquake that struck the Kumamoto Prefecture in Japan on the 14th and 16th of April 2016. The President, further in his message, expressed confidence that the resilient people of Japan will overcome the calamity with their indomitable spirit and courage.
Minister of Women and Child Affairs, Hon. Chandrani Bandara Jayasingha delivered a statement today (15th March 2016) during the general discussion of the 60th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women. The priority theme of this year’s CSW60 is ‘Women’s Empowerment and its link to sustainable development.’ In her statement, Ms. Jayasingha noted the importance of empowering women in order to ensure the successful implementation of the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Mangala Samaraweera concluded a three-day visit to New York to attend the UNDP 50th Anniversary Ministerial meeting held at the UN Headquarters, from the 21st-24th of February.

Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the United Nations, Ambassador Dr. Amrith Rohan Perera offers his condolences to UN Secretary General Mr. Ban Ki Moon on the passing of Mr. Boutros Boutros Ghali, sixth Secretary General of the United Nations (1992 – 1996). Dr. Boutros Boutros Ghali was the first Arab and the first from Africa to hold the post.
Sri Lanka ratified the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities on 08th February 2016 and became the 162nd State to ratify this Convention.
