Special Statement by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe on 13th May 2019

Date:
Tuesday, 14 May 2019

Global terrorism struck Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday in an inhuman manner. Investigations by our security forces are progressing rapidly and successfully. We have been able to apprehend most of the perpetrators. Our security forces managed to bring the situation under control.

However, if communal conflicts threaten to disturb the peace, the country gets destabilized. Outbreaks of this nature seriously hamper ongoing investigations by the security forces. The Festival of Vesak gets sabotaged as a result of these sporadic incidents as well.

Some groups attempted to create chaos and caused damage to property in certain parts of the Wayamba Province. By now the Police and armed forces have brought the situation under control. These groups are looking to instigate unrest in other areas.

The purpose of these groups is to inconvenience our Police and armed forces, disrupt civilian life, and destabilize the country.

Therefore the Government decided to announce an island-wide curfew.

I have empowered the security forces with full authority to take stern action against individuals who disturb the peace and violate the emergency law and curfew. They are taking steps to deal severely with all offenders.

I request each one of you to extend your fullest support to our Police and armed forces to maintain peace across the country.
