Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to visit Sri Lanka for bilateral discussions

Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Mr. Sergey Lavrov, will arrive in Sri Lanka on 13 January 2020 for bilateral discussions with Foreign Minister Dinesh Gunawardena. This is the first Official visit from the Russian Federation following the Presidential elections in November 2019, and the appointment of a new Cabinet of Ministers in Sri Lanka.  

Foreign Minister Lavrov’s upcoming visit to the country, which is being undertaken after ten years since 2009, will renew and revitalize the longstanding bilateral relations between the two countries. Minister Lavrov will meet with President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa during his stay in Colombo. 

The official discussions between Foreign Minister Gunawardena with his Russian counterpart are expected to review the bilateral engagement and open new avenues of cooperation in the economic, security, education, tourism and science and technology sectors. Close engagement in the regional and multilateral fora to pursue shared solutions to common challenges will also feature in the discussions. 

The two ministers will address the media at a joint press conference following the bilateral meeting on 14 January 2020.
