The Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka mourns the passing of former Ambassador Nissanka Wijewardane

H.E. Nissanka Wijewardane as a Vice President of the Forty Second Session of the UN General Assembly presides over a plenary meeting (1987)

 

It is with great sadness that we have learned of the passing of H.E Mr. Nissanka Wijewardane on May 9th 2019, at the age of 93. Ambassador Wijewardena served as Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the United Nations from 1986-1988 and Patron of the Sri Lanka Association of New York.

 

He had a long public service career as  a civil servant including being the Secretary to President Gopallawa, the Chairman of the Bank of Ceylon, and Chairman of the Board of Investments. He was also the first Chairman of Janashakthi Insurance.

 

He was conferred the Nation’s highest civilian honor Deshamanya 1992.

 

We acknowledge his long dedication and committed service to the nation of Sri Lanka, as a highly respected leader and representative.

 

The Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka to the United Nations offers its sincere condolences to Ambassador Wijewardane’s family and relatives for the deep loss they have experienced.
