His Excellency President Maithripala Sirisena is congratulated by Hon. Mangala Samaraweera, Minister of Foreign Affairs and other Ministers moments after he delivered the National Address to the 71st Session of the United Nations General Assembly on 21 September 2016. This was the second time His Excellency Maithripala Sirisena addressed the United Nations in his capacity as President of Sri Lanka.

His Excellency President Maithripala Sirisena at the 71st Sessions of the United Nations General Assembly moments after handing over the instrument of ratification of the Paris Agreement to UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon on 21 September 2016. He is joined by Hon. Mangala Samaraweera, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Mahinda Samarasinghe, Minister of Skills Development and Vocational Training, Hon. Faiszer Mustapha, Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government, Hon. Ajit P. Perera, Deputy Minister of Power and Renewable Energy and the Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, Dr. Rohan Perera.

Foreign Minister Hon. Mangala Samaraweera met with Hon. Mikheil Janelidze, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia on 22nd September 2016 on the sidelines of the 71stSessions of the United Nations General Assembly to discuss matters of mutual interest. Hon. Gayantha Karunathilaka, Minister Parliamentary Reforms and Mass Media and Hon. Faiszer Musthapha, Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government also participated in the discussions.

Foreign Minister Hon. Mangala Samaraweera participated at the Informal Luncheon Meeting of the SAARC Council of Ministers convened by Nepal the current Chair of SAARC

Foreign Minister Hon. Mangala Samaraweera participated at the Informal Luncheon Meeting of the SAARC Council of Ministers convened by Nepal the current Chair of SAARC on the sidelines of the 71st Session of the UNGA in New York on 21 September 2016. In his National Statement at the meeting Minister Samaraweera said that the present government has initiated constructive and pragmatic measures to expand international trade, economic cooperation and investment and that close relations with SAARC countries and friendly ties with neighbours had become the main pillars of Sri Lanka’s foreign policy.

Bilateral meetings held with Hon MFA on the sidelines of the 71st UNGA in New York

A Bilateral meeting between Hon. Mangala Samaraweera, Minister of Foreign Affairs with Ambassador Ms. Moushira Khatab, Candidate for post of Director General of UNESCO from Egypt was held on 21st September 2016 on the sidelines of the 71st UNGA in New York. Ambassador Khatab outlined her vision for UNESCO.  Sri Lanka is a member of the Executive Board of UNESCO (2015 -2019). Hon. Ajith P. Perera, Deputy Minister of Power and Renewable Energy also participated in the discussions.

The Minister for Asia and the Pacific, UK,  Mr. Alok Sharma, M.P, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office sought a bilateral meeting with Foreign Minister Hon. Mangala Samaraweera on the sidelines of the 71st UNGA in New York. Discussions held on 22 September 2016 centered around matters of mutual cooperation.

A Bilateral meeting was held between Hon. Mangala Samaraweera, Minister of Foreign Affairs and  Dr. Mohamed Asim, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Maldives  on  22nd September 2016. The two Ministers discussed matters of mutual interest.

Foreign Minister Hon. Mangala Samaraweera met with Mr. Jean Paul Laborde Executive Direoctor of the UN Counter Terrorism Executive Directorate on 23rd September 2016 on the sidelines of the 71st Sessions of the United Nations General Assembly at the Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka to the UN in New York to discuss matters of mutual cooperation.
