Mission celebrates National Reconciliation and Integration Week

The Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka to the United Nations held a special ceremony on Monday 9 January 2016  to mark the commencement of National Integration and Reconciliation Week. The proceedings commenced at 11:00 a.m. with the hoisting of the National Flag in the presence of all diplomatic officers and staff of the mission followed by the singing  the National Anthem in both Sinhala and Tamil. The staff then read the oath of reconciliation in all three languages which included a pledge to join hands with one another to achieve the noble objective to foster peace among all citizens and communities in Sri Lanka with understanding and mutual trust and a boundless sense of brotherhood, in order to build a prosperous nation with a Sri Lankan identity. Deputy Permanent Representative and Charge d ’Affairs Ambassador Sabarullah Khan delivering a heartfelt speech on the value of national integrity and reconciliation drawing inspiration from his childhood in Eastern Sri Lanka. Ambassador Khan noted that it is often human nature to create division to pursue agendas of control and power but we must rise against this inclination for the sake of economical social and humanitarian advancement of the entire Sri Lankan community. The Government has designated 8 – 14 January 2017 as National Integration and Reconciliation Week.
