The first session of the Intergovernmental Conference (IGC)on an international legally binding instrument under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction (BBNJ) was held from 4th – 17th September 2018 at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

Samoa’s Justice Vui Clarence Nelson re-elected to Committee on the Rights of the Child [CRC] for further 4-year term.

The seventeenth meeting of the States Parties of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) was held at UN Headquarters, New York on 29th June 2018. The agenda, inter alia, included the election of nine (9) members for the Committee on the Rights of the Child (Committee) to replace those who will complete their terms on 28 February 2019.

Ms Maliliga Sefululua Vasa, Principal Sector Planning Officer from the Ministry of Finance of Samoa attended the Fifty first Session of the Commission on Population and Development (CPD51) that was held from the 9th – 13th April 2018. 

Maliliga delivered the national statement for Samoa on the 11th April 2018, during the general debate of the CPD51. The statement reaffirmed the commitment of the Samoa Government to the ICPD Program of Action through national policies and programme implementation.

Ambassador Ali’ioaiga Feturi Elisaia delivered Samoa’s national statement at the first regular session 2018 of the Executive Board of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) on Monday 22nd January 2018. Ambassador took the floor during the UNDP segment following the statement by the UNDP Administrator, Mr. Achim Steiner. He acknowledged the vital work UNDP carries out in supporting developing countries in achieving the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals.

Ambassador Aliioaiga Feturi Elisaia delivered Samoa’s national statement during the 16th Session of the Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC) on the 7th December 2017.  Samoa became a member of the Bureau of State Parties in 2005 and will conclude its term during the 16th Session of the ASP, making it 12 consecutive years of service.
