Prime Minister of Samoa at the 74th Session of the United Nations General Assembly

The High Level Week of the 74th session of the UN General Assembly is convened from 23rd to 27th September 2019 with five (5) High Level Summits and Dialogues starting with the Climate Summit, The Universal Health Coverage Summit, the High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (SDG Summit), the Financing for Development High Level Dialogue and to end with the High level meeting on the Mid Term Review of the SAMOA Pathway.
Prior to the start of the High Level week Summits, the Annual Pacific Island Forum Leaders meeting with the Secretary General of the United Nations was held on Saturday 21 September 2019. The Leaders highlighted important issues for the Pacific Island Forum countries such as Climate and Security, Peace and Security, Health, the sustainable development goals, the 2050 Pacific Strategy and Ocean and how the United Nations and its multi-country office in the Pacific can assist with the implementation of projects to enhance and accelerate the implementation of the SAMOA Pathway, the 2030 Agenda, the Paris Agreement and other relevant frameworks for the sustainable development of our island countries. The Prime Minister, Honourable Tuila’epa Sailele Malielegaoi delivered his intervention focusing on the SAMOA Pathway and ways in which the UN Secretariat and UN Funds and Programme Agencies can assist in accelerating the implementation of the SAMOA Pathway for the Pacific Island Forum Countries in the remaining five (5) years.
The Prime Minister Honourable Tuila’epa Sailele Malielegaoi spoke at the Universal Health Coverage Summit held on Monday 23rd September and at the Leaders dialogue on “Localizing the Sustainable Development Goals” on Wednesday 25th 2019. During the SDG Summit he highlighted some of the existing good practices for Samoa such as the alignment of the 17 goals of the 2030 Agenda to the Development Strategy of Samoa (SDS) enabling the linkages of the SDG implementation to existing Monitoring and
Evaluation Frameworks as well as the linking of coherent policies and partnerships to relevant SDGs.
The Prime Minister and delegation also attended the Climate Action Summit convened by the Secretary-General of the United Nations under the theme of “A race we can win, A race we must Win,” with the aim to boost ambition to rapidly accelerate action for the implementation of the Paris Agreement. Following the Summit he signed the Youth Pledge entitled the “Kwon Gesh Pledge” committing our leaders to ensure that the youth voices on climate issues are heard by involving them in the conversation on the national implementation of the Paris Agreement. Samoa was also part of the Alliance of Small Island Developing States (AOSIS) pledges and projects submitted as SIDS package of ambitious actions for Climate Summit Action.
During this High Level week, Honourable Tuila’epa Sailele Malielegaoi attended the Reception hosted by President Donald Trump as host country and also the India-Pacific Island Leaders Meeting with Prime Minister Modi. India offered all Pacific countries to each submit a development project to the value of US$1m.
In the next two days, the Prime Minister is expected to speak at the High Level Plenary on the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, the High Level Review of the SAMOA Pathwa and deliver his address at the UN General Assembly.
