First Regular Session of the Executive Boards - UNDP/UNFPA/UNOPS

Date:
Monday, 22 January 2018

Ambassador Ali’ioaiga Feturi Elisaia delivered Samoa’s national statement at the first regular session 2018 of the Executive Board of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) on Monday 22nd January 2018. Ambassador took the floor during the UNDP segment following the statement by the UNDP Administrator, Mr. Achim Steiner. He acknowledged the vital work UNDP carries out in supporting developing countries in achieving the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals. Ambassador Feturi drew the attention of the UNDP to three issues that were pertinent to Samoa and the Pacific region in light of the United Nations reform agenda.  Firstly, empowering the role of the Resident Coordinator system outlined in the recommendations of the Quadrennial Comprehensive Policy Review (QCPR). Secondly, addressing challenges multi country offices (MCO) face throughout the Pacific; MCOs should be sufficiently resourced and adequately staffed to respond to the complex matters under their purview. This demands a need for effective UN presence in each country for delivery of services on the ground. And lastly, Ambassador Elisaia emphasized the importance of mainstreaming SAMOA Pathway into the agenda of UNDP and the UN Development System.
