2018, New York City – The Philippine Mission to the United Nations, represented by Chargé d’Affaires, a.i., and Deputy Permanent Representative Ms. Kira Christianne D. Azucena, and in partnership with the Permanent Mission of Japan, co-sponsored the 7th “Peace is…” event, dubbed “Peace is...Co-existence” event (Tea Ceremony for Peace and Innovation) held at the UNHQ Visitors Lobby.

The event’s thematic focus was on the Sustainable Development Goals (“Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation for Sustainable Development Goals”).

The event featured the assembly of “ZEN-An” (The Suitcase Tea Room), created by producer and architect Mr. Kuniji Tsubaki.  “ZEN-An” aims to “create a portable space of traditional Japanese Tea Room using only the best Japanese craftsmanship.” After “ZEN-An” was assembled, Mr. Tsubaki served a bowl of matcha (green tea) to Sword master, Ms. Kyo Kasumi.

Japanese singer Ms. Mai Fujisawa also performed before the UN crowd, accompanied by the UN Chamber Music Society of the UN Staff Recreation Council (SRC).

Aside from the Philippines, the event’s co-sponsors were the Permanent Missions of Austria, Bangladesh, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Costa Rica, Finland, Germany, Indonesia, Italy, Kenya, Mexico, and Poland.

Under-Secretary-General Ms. Alison Smale, USG for Global Communications and Head of the UN Department of Public Information (DPI) also attended the event.

A cultural presentation organized by the Mission of Japan in coordination with the UN Department of Public Information (DPI) since April 2017, “Peace is…” provides an opportunity to engage the public and other UN stakeholders on “what peace means for them.”

The Philippines previously co-sponsored two (2) Peace is… events at the UNHQ in partnership with the Permanent Mission of Japan: (a) “Peace is…Beautiful” held on 25 August 2017  (focus on ASEAN’s 50th Anniversary); and (b) “Peace is…Acceptance” held on 22 January 2018 (focus on Refugees). END
