Philippine Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Kira Christianne Azucena said the Human Rights Council is a platform for dialogue in her statement at the General Assembly meeting that considered the Council’s Report.

New York, 05 November 2020 – “Human rights issues must be addressed within the global context through a constructive, non-confrontational, and non-politicized, dialogue-based approach” said Deputy Permanent Representative of the Philippines to the United Nations Ambassador Kira Christianne Azucena, while underscoring the Philippine’s commitment to the promotion, protection and fulfillment of human rights as she addressed the General Assembly during its General Debate on the Report of the Human Rights Council.

Ambassador Azucena affirmed PH’s continued engagement with the Human Rights Council and with international partners in a constructive manner. “The multi-year Joint Program which the Philippines is pursuing with the UN Resident Coordinator in Manila attests to my country’s commitment to this approach,” she added.

She expressed the Philippine’s concern over the practice of selective adoption of country-specific resolutions that do not have the support of the country concerned, saying thesefail to have meaningful benefit on the ground. Ambassador Azucena acknowledged the consensual adoption of the Human Rights Council resolution “Technical cooperation and capacity building for the promotion and protection of human rights in the Philippines,” which the Philippines sponsored, and expressed hope that the activities that will be undertaken pursuant to it will have positive benefit on the lives of Filipinos.
