04 November 2019, New York – At the United Nations Security Council, the Philippines, speaking on behalf of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), highlighted its commitment to the implementation of the women, peace and security agenda on 04 November 2019.

In the joint statement, Chargé ďAffaires Kira Azucena expressed ASEAN member states’ view that increasing women’s full and meaningful participation is essential to advancing the women, peace and security agenda. “ASEAN recognizes and promotes the indispensable role of women in all stages of the peace process, including in peacebuilding efforts and conflict prevention,” said Ms. Azucena.
She also underscored the establishment of the ASEAN Women and Peace Registry, a compendium of women leaders in ASEAN with expertise in the various aspects of peace processes and reconciliation. The Registry strengthens the capacity of women as peacebuilders and encourages a more gender-balanced approach to conflict resolution.

ASEAN member states are united in the view that peace and security are essential to the achievement of sustainable development. “ASEAN believes that increasing women’s participation in decision-making with respect to conflict management and resolution will help overcome the societal divide,” said Ms. Azucena.
