The United Nations Headquarters in New York is joining the global green revolution by installing electric vehicle chargers in its car park.
Three electric vehicle charging stations in the UN garage under the Secretariat Building in New York were opened on 12 April 2017. The United Nations seeks to incentivize UN Permanent Missions, its car-driving delegates and staff to increase the number of zero-emission miles driven to commute and improve local air quality.
The installation of electric vehicle charging stations, fuelled by low-carbon energy, supports a growing share of the automobile market — at 33% per year — and encourages drivers to adopt clean transportation options. Studies reveal that employees are up to 20 times more likely to buy a plug-in car if their employer offers at-work charging.
“Achieving Sustainable Development Goals on sustainable transportation, clean urban air, and affordable, clean energy is central to the transformation of the global energy system. Local communities should get on board, thereby improving the daily lives of people affected by pollution. The inauguration of these electric vehicle chargers at the UN is a small but important step in the right direction. I hope the day is imminent when the whole of the UN vehicle fleet is powered by clean, electric energy”, General Assembly President Peter Thomson said at a tour to inspect the newly installed chargers.
Stephen Cutts, Assistant Secretary-General for the Office of Central Support Services, added: “I am delighted that the Secretariat has installed these Electric Vehicle Charging Stations. Not only are these an additional amenity for our clients, but they also symbolise the United Nations’ commitment to “greening” initiatives and to promoting sustainable practices wherever we can.”
The new chargers are powered by low-carbon energy and are in line with the UN’s commitment to sustainable development and, in particular, to Sustainable Development Goal 11 on sustainable transportation and cleaner urban air quality, and Goal 7, which aims to accelerate the transition to affordable, reliable and sustainable energy for all.
The installed chargers are compatible with all electrical/hybrid plug-in vehicles and also with the HQ’s electrical voltage. They can be utilized by registered parking permit holders that apply to do so with the UN Garage Administration.
