Tuesday, 2 April 2019 | New York | UNMAS
On 4 April, International Mine Awareness Day, come join the Threat Mitigation Advisory Team (TMAT) from the UN Mine Action Service (UNMAS) in the Staff Entrance lobby of the Secretariat building to learn about threats that UN personnel can face in missions today.
You will have the opportunity to participate in a skills lab where Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Improvised Explosive Device (IED) technicians from Germany, the Netherlands, and the United States (TMAT) provide an interactive, hands-on forum for United Nations staff to test their abilities to render safe an IED.
You will learn about current threats, how to interpret an x-ray, how to remotely move a suspected package. And these skills can immediately be put to good use as you will be given the chance to attempt to safely disarm a model IED. The UNMAS IED threat mitigation advisory team will be in the lobby from 0900-1100am and from 1230-2pm on 4 April. Stop by if you can. Become aware of the threats that could exist, and better understand how to protect yourself and colleagues.
If you are unable to visit the TMAT team in person, a Mine Action Day 2019 Knowledge Quiz, is available. This interactive learning tool gives UN Staff an idea of the present threat of IEDs and the work being done to mitigate this threat. If you get a 10-or-higher score out of 20, you are eligible to win a prize.
