Mr. Shaaban Muhammad Shaaban, former Under-Secretary-General for General Assembly and Conference Management, passed away on 29 September 2017.
As the Head of the Department for General Assembly and Conference Management (DGACM) from 2007 to 2012, Mr. Shaaban was a familiar face on the podium of the General Assembly Hall, serving as Secretary of the General Assembly and for many major United Nations conferences.
At DGACM, he is remembered as an effective manager. When the Department experienced rounds of budget cuts under his tenure, he spared no effort to ensure that service delivery was not affected and that clients received the same level of quality services across the board.
A linguist by training and a passionate advocate of the language professions, Mr. Shaaban initiated the UN’s outreach programme with institutions which train language professionals. The MoU network now encompasses 23 universities worldwide. In this innovative programme, he saw an opportunity for overcoming the succession planning challenges that the UN language services were facing. Over the years, he proactively sought to expand the network. He chaired the first two MoU conferences hosted in Salamanca (Spain) and Mons (Belgium). His personal engagement was critical to ensuring succession planning in the Department.
In addition, Mr. Shaaban was instrumental in building partnerships with sister international organizations, laying a solid foundation for future collaborations. From 2007 to 2012, he chaired all the meetings of the international network of conference services managers, known as IAMLADP.
This year, as we celebrate the tenth anniversary of the MoU network, Mr. Shaaban’s leadership and vision are remembered by the conference management community far and wide.
