International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers 2019

Wednesday, 22 May 2019

Wednesday, 22 May 2019 | New York | DPO

On this day, we honour the memory of the 119 military, police and civilian peacekeepers who lost their lives in the cause of peace in 2018 and early 2019. We also pay tribute to all the men and women, who have served and continue to serve, in UN peacekeeping operations for their professionalism, dedication and courage.

The theme -  Protecting Civilians, Protecting Peace - was chosen to mark the 20th anniversary of the Security Council resolution that explicitly mandated a peacekeeping mission to protect civilians.

Main Events at UNHQ

At UN Headquarters in New York, the commemorations will be held on Friday, 24 May. We invite you to attend (all times are New York):

  • 9:30 am - Wreath-laying ceremony held at the Peacekeeping Memorial site near the Secretariat’s northern boundary (in case of rain, the location is the Chagall Peace Window, Visitor’s Lobby).
  • 10:00 am - Captain Mbaye Diagne Medal for Exceptional Courage and the Dag Hammarskjöld Medal Ceremony in Trusteeship Council Chamber.

The Secretary-General will lead all three ceremonies. This is a historic year for us, as the Secretary-General will award, for the first time, the Captain Mbaye Diagne Medal for Exceptional Courage to the late Private Chancy Chitete of Malawi. The Diagne Medal is named after a Senegalese peacekeeper who was killed in Rwanda in 1994 after saving countless civilian lives.

You can also follow the events live via UN Web TV (the wreath-laying ceremony will be online later).

Other Events

  • 12:00 pm - Press conference with Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix. Follow live at UN Web TV.
  • 12:45 pm - Medal parade for uniformed officers serving at Headquarters along the East River, opposite the Rose Garden.
