Have you ever wondered how much the UN system is spending towards a particular SDG or target?

Have you ever thought about how much funding is flowing from UN organizations to a country, say Afghanistan?

Or how much is being spent collectively across the system on peace operations?

Up to now, comprehensive system-wide data has not been available to answer these questions.

To address the need for more timely, comprehensive, and meaningful data on UN system revenue and expenses, entities have collectively worked to develop a set of standards for UN system-wide reporting of financial data. This has been jointly pioneered by the High-Level Committee on Management of the Chief Executives Board for Coordination (CEB) and the United Nations Sustainable Development Group (UNSDG).

The CEB Secretariat publishes annual financial statistics for the UN system. The collection of financial data for the 2018 financial period will fully incorporate these new data standards, resulting in over 40 UN organizations reporting on how, where, and why they are spending their resources in a transparent manner.

To assist entities with the implementation of the standards, two workshops were held in Geneva and New York last month. They included 23 UN organizations.

In an effort to align reporting across UN financial data platforms, the workshops also welcomed participation from the secretariats of the International Aid Transparency Initiative and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, two other platforms for reporting of financial data, with a view to easing the reporting burden for all UN organizations.

The workshops were a first step in the roadmap towards full implementation of the standards and achievement of the goal of having good data on funding flows UN system-wide, aligned with the SDGs.

The published standards are available on the CEB website.
