In the lead up to and during the Ocean Conference - held from 5 to 9 June 2017 at UN Headquarters in New York - the global network of UN Information Centres (UNICs) organized a variety of activities to promote and raise awareness of the Conference.

The Conference appealed to Governments and the global community to implement Sustainable Development Goal 14: Life below water, which calls for the conservation and sustainable use of the oceans, seas, and marine resources.

UNICs galvanized their local communities by organizing activities, such as beach clean-ups, exhibitions, seminars, panel discussions, symposiums, briefings for students, competitions, and film screenings.  They also did extensive media outreach, including interviews, public service announcements, newspaper supplements, press releases, and social media campaigns.

The activities were jointly organized with UN Country Teams, government ministries, civil society, cultural institutions, the private sector, and the general public. UNICs also produced promotional and information materials such as trash bins, bracelets, brochures, and banners in local languages to ensure that the message of conserving our ocean and seas was well understood.
