Press Release-Conclusion of the Second Resumed Session of the Fifth Committee and elections for the bureaus of the main committees

The Fifth Committee (Administrative and Budgetary) of the 70th session of the United Nations General Assembly concluded its second resumed session today by recommending to the General Assembly to authorize the allocation of $7.86 billion to finance 15 peacekeeping missions for the year beginning 1 July 2016. There are various 25 resolutions and a decision in today’s recommendations.

H.E. Mr. Durga Prasad Bhattarai, Ambassador/Permanent Representative of Nepal to the United Nations, was elected Chair of the Committee in June last year. The speakers taking the floor during the meeting appreciated the Chair and the Bureau members for the extraordinary efficiency of the work of the Fifth Committee during this session.

The Committee also elected by acclamation Rapporteur and two Vice-Chairs for the 71st session of the United Nations General Assembly. The election of Chair and one of the vice chairs was postponed as the Group of Latin American and Caribbean States and the Eastern European Group respectively, are yet to nominate candidates.

Earlier today, elections were also held in the main committees to elect respective bureaus. Mr. Sabri Boukadoum (Algeria), Mr. Dian Triansyah Djani (Indonesia), Ms. María Emma Mejía Vélez (Colombia) and Mr. Vladimir Drobnjak (Croatia) were elected by acclamation as Chairs for the First Committee (Disarmament and International Security), the Second Committee (Economic and Financial), the Third Committee (Social, Humanitarian and Cultural) and the Fourth Committee (Special Political and Decolonization) respectively. Similarly, the Sixth Committee (Legal) elected H.E. Mr. Danny Danon (Israel) as Chair by a vote.
