STATEMENT BY H.E. MR. SUKHBOLD SUKHEE, AMBASSADOR EXTRAORDINARY AND PLENIPOTENTIARY, PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF MONGOLIA TO THE UNITED NATIONS ON AGRICULTURE DEVELOPMENT, FOOD SECURITY AND NUTRITION

Madam Chair,

 

My delegation associates itself with the statements made by the distinguished representatives of Thailand on behalf of the Group of 77 and China.

I also wish to thank the Secretary General for his comprehensive reports submitted under this Agenda Item.

Madam Chair,

Agriculture, food security and nutrition remain central to the Government policy goals of many developing countries, including my own country.  

The newly formed Government of Mongolia has developed its Action Plan to be implemented for the period of 2016-2020, reflecting Mongolia’s Sustainable Development Vision 2030. With a view to ensuring sustainable development of the agriculture and food, the Government of Mongolia launched national programs on “Healthy Food – Healthy Mongolian”, “National Production” and “First Campaign of Meat and Milk Production”.  These programs are aimed to increase the competitiveness of the food production and create the opportunity to export value added product, ensure supply of healthy and safe food products to the population by organizing and stabilize the food provision. Furthermore, the Government of Mongolia attaches importance to the creation of legal environment for organic and functional food and support their production through financial, investment and tax policy.

The Government of Mongolia will continue to implement “Third Crop Cultivation Campaign”, which contributes about 20 per cent to the total agricultural output in Mongolia. “Third Crop Cultivation Campaign” has brought environmentally friendly or zero tillage technology to conserve soil fertility and highly productive planting and to introduce harvesting equipment and machineries. One of the achievements of the Crop Campaign is the attainment of national self-suffiency in wheat production. 

Madam Chair,

The Action Plan of the Government of Mongolia sets a target to create an environment for citizen to consume healthy and safe food and improve food safety through the establishment of food preparation, processing, storage, transportation, and sale system. The Government of Mongolia also believes that the establishment of an integrated registration and electronic information system for food safety is instrumental to ensure food security and nutrition.

Madam Chair,

The full and effective implementation of the Sustainable Development Goal 2 and its targets is indispensable in order to eradicate hunger and malnutrition, as well as achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Pursuant to above, the Government of Mongolia recently celebrated “World Food Day and 100 Days of Action”, including United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization and other international partners to provide an opportunity for the public to learn more about their Government’s actions including the collaboration with international organizations for World Food Day.
