New York: On 16 November, the United Nations General Assembly adopted with consensus its resolution “Education for democracy” A/71/L.10

The resolution co-authored by Mongolia and 42 member states promotes education for democracy, while recognizing the essential role of education in the achievement of all internationally agreed development goals, including the Sustainable Development Goals. It encourages national, regional and local education authorities to integrate education for democracy, along with civic education, human rights education and education for sustainable development into the education standards, in order to facilitate the empowerment of citizens and their participation in political life and policymaking at all levels.

The author Mongolia highlighted the well-established links between human rights, democracy and development, made explicit in the context of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and referred to the recommendations as contained in the Director-General’s report “Literacy for life: shaping future agendas and education for democracy”. 

Member States also acknowledged the Secretary General’s Global Education First Initiative, launched in 2012 and its third priority area on fostering global citizenship, and the importance of the Incheon Declaration: Education 2030: Towards inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong learning for all, adopted at the World Education Forum 2015.

In the framework of the monitoring of the SDG 4, the resolution also referred to the Global Education Monitoring Report 2016, which affirms the potential of education in encouraging constructive and inclusive political participation.

The UN Secretary-General, in cooperation with the Director General of the UNESCO and Special Rapporteur on the right to education, will submit a report to the General Assembly at its 73rd Session on the implementation of the <a name="_GoBack"></a>resolution.
