Date:
Saturday, 28 May 2016

The United Nation’s Secretary General Mr. Ban Ki Moon announced Friday May 20, 2016, the appointment of Amb. Macharia Kamau and Mrs. Mary Robinson as Special Envoys on El Niño and Climate.

The appointment comes at a time where several countries in Southern Africa, Horn of Africa, Central America and the Pacific are reeling from the devastating effects of El Nino. The Office of United Nations Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs estimates that 60 million people have been affected by the crisis.

The two envoys will visit the affected areas over the coming weeks to raise awareness and funds for the humanitarian response. In this regard, a pledging conference is expected to take place during the High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) in July, 2016.
