JAMAICA TO HOST INTER-PARLIAMENTARY MEETING ON GENDER EQUALITY

KINGSTON, Dec. 7 (JIS):

Jamaica will host the Inter-Parliamentary Meeting on Gender Equality for ParlAmericas’ Anglophone membership in Kingston from January 24 to 25, 2018. 

This was disclosed by Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Hon. Olivia Grange, during the 25th anniversary awards luncheon of the Jamaica Women’s Political Caucus held at The Jamaica Pegasus hotel in New Kingston on December 5.

Jamaica's Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator the Honourable Kamina Johnson Smith was appointed on Tuesday, 5th December 2017, to preside over the Council of Ministers of the ACP Group of Countries, for a six-month period from February to July 2018.

KINGSTON, Dec. 6 (JIS):

The civil and identification database being established under the National Identification System (NIDS) is now 90 per cent complete.

This was disclosed by Project Director for NIDS, Warren Vernon, who noted that work is advanced “in terms of defining all of the features and the requirements in order to deliver the system”.

He was speaking at a town hall meeting at Emancipation Park in New Kingston on Tuesday (December 5).

CARICOM REPORT TO BE TABLED IN THE HOUSE IN JANUARY

KINGSTON, Dec. 6 (JIS):

Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, says the final report from the CARICOM Review Commission will be brought to Parliament in January 2018.

 “The CARICOM Report is still before Cabinet, and it will be addressed as one of the first reports early next year. In fact, I want to take it in the second sitting of Parliament next year,” the Prime Minister told the House of Representatives on December 5.

The Government continues work to ensure gender equality through the launch of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Gender Equality Seal certification programme, which aims to address gaps in the workplace and create equitable conditions for both men and women.

The official launch of the programme took place on December 5 at The Knutsford Court hotel in Kingston.

GOVERNMENT TO REVIEW NATIONAL TRANSPORT POLICY

KINGSTON, Dec. 6 (JIS):

            The Government is to commence review of the 2007 National Transport Policy (NTP) during the 2018/19 financial year.

            Director of the Projects Unit in the Transport and Mining Ministry, Tanya Bedward, said the review will take into consideration the aviation industry.

            “Part of the process will be to revisit the current policy and to also assess it within all the changes that would have happened in the (aviation) sector, which would have been significant over the years,” she said.

DART RETURNS FROM DOMINICA

The Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART), which was deployed to Dominica in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, has returned to the island, having assisted with rebuilding operations in that country.

This was disclosed by Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, during a Statement to the House of Representatives on Tuesday (December 5).

PM URGES JUNIOR MAYORS TO HELP PUSH LOCAL GOVERNMENT

            Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, is urging the island’s Junior Mayors to use their platform to inspire more Jamaicans to support the activities of local government. 

            He gave the charge as he welcomed the youth representatives of the island’s 14 municipal corporations during a courtesy call at Jamaica House on Wednesday, December 6.

             Appointment of the Junior Mayors is the last major activity for Local Government Month in November.

Today, Saturday, December 2, Jamaica joins with the international community in commemorating, the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery, which marks the adoption, by the UN General Assembly in 1949, of the United Nations Convention for the Suppression of the Traffic in Persons and of the Exploitation of the Prostitution of Others.
