Senator the Honourable Kamina Johnson Smith, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade has congratulated economist and politician, Epsy Campbell Barr on her election as Costa Rica’s Vice President.

 

The new Vice President who is the first black female to hold that post in Latin America, is named after her paternal grandmother, who migrated from Jamaica to Costa Rica.

Senator the Honourable Kamina Johnson Smith, Minister of Foreign Affairs and

Foreign Trade has expressed condolences to the families and friends of the

victims of  last Thursday’s tragic collapse of a pedestrian bridge at the

Florida International University (FIU), reported to have claimed six lives.

 

As media reports have sadly indicated, a Jamaican man, Navaro Brown, 37, was

one of the six victims.  This information has now been confirmed officially by

Senator the Honourable Kamina Johnson Smith, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade will next week welcome to Jamaica His Excellency Mr. Luis Videgaray Casa, Foreign Secretary of Mexico.

Secretary Videgaray will pay a Working Visit to Jamaica from March 5-6. On Tuesday, March 6, he will engage in discussions with his counterpart, Minister Johnson Smith, on current and future developments in the Jamaica-Mexico bilateral relationship, as well as on recent regional political developments.

JAMAICA AND EU ENGAGE IN POLITICAL DIALOGUE

Jamaica and the European Union (EU) conducted their 4th political dialogue on 21 February. Both sides committed to further deepen the collaboration on building a more effective partnership for growth and development. The talks which included 10 Ambassadors from European Member States (Belgium, France, Germany, Spain, the United Kingdom, Bulgaria, The Netherlands, Poland, Romania and Sweden)   were held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade (MFAFT) on Wednesday, February 21st.

His Excellency Charles Thembani Ntwaagae, outgoing High Commissioner of Botswana to Jamaica, paid a Farewell Call on Jamaica’s Foreign Minister late last week at the Ministry’s New Kingston offices.

 

“The Botswana/Jamaica relationship is very much appreciated, and I thank you for your efforts to further deepen the cooperation between us,” Senator the Honourable Kamina Johnson Smith shared with the High Commissioner.

Senator the Honourable Kamina Johnson Smith, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade has announced that on Thursday, February 22, 2018, Jamaica will host a Diplomatic Day in honour of resident and non-resident diplomats assigned to Jamaica.

On that occasion, Minister Johnson Smith will brief the diplomats on important national developments as well as priority Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade issues being pursued by the Government of Jamaica.

Jamaica has exhorted the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Group of States to remain focused on its "common interests, common goals and common destiny", as it begins the final stretch of preparations for the negotiations with the European Union on a successor arrangement to the Cotonou Partnership Agreement. The engagement with the EU for this purpose is set to begin by September 2018.

Foreign Minister, Senator the Hon. Kamina Johnson Smith, has announced the upcoming visit of Mr. Stefano Manservisi, Director-General for International Cooperation and Development in the European Commission based in Brussels.

Mr. Manservisi will lead a high level delegation to Kingston from 1 -2 February for regional and bilateral talks with several high level government representatives from Jamaica and the wider Caribbean.
