Mandatory 10-digit Calling Takes Effect Today in Jamaica

Starting today, making phone calls will require 10 digits, with the first three being 876 or the newly introduced area code of 658.

The Office of Utilities Regulation has said that the additional area code is to ensure that there are sufficient numbers to meet the demand over the next 25 years because the 876 area code that has been in use since 1996 has almost been exhausted.

Twenty-Nine (29) volunteers of the United States Peace Corps (PCV) were officially sworn in on Tuesday, May 22, after they made their pledges at the Collin Powell Plaza in Manor Park.
While motivating and encouraging the spirit of volunteerism, Senator the Honourable Pearnel Charles Jr., State Minister for Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, in his speech reminded the volunteers that “the core of being here is to move and stretch beyond the normal.”

Regional development issues pertaining to the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) trade and economic agenda will form part of the focus of two days of deliberations at the 46th meeting of the Council for Trade and Economic Development (COTED) slated for Georgetown, Guyana from May 16-17.

 

COTED is responsible for the promotion of trade and economic development of the Community.

Thirty Five Jamaicans will participate and benefit from the Indian Technical Economic Cooperation Programme (ITEC) in the coming year.

 

Senator the Honourable Pearnel Charles Jr. Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, and His Excellency, Sevala Naik, High Commissioner of India to Jamaica, recently discussed expanding the 50-year-old programme, in which public sector and quasi-government employees are given the opportunity to spend 2-6 months receiving technical training in areas of special interest in India.

Senator the Honourable Pearnel Charles Jr. has been assigned as Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade by the Prime Minister, the Most Honourable Andrew Holness.  Senator Charles  was formally welcomed to the Ministry by Senator the Hon. Kamina Johnson Smith, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, in the presence of the Permanent Secretary and wider Ministry staff, on Thursday March 29.
