JAMAICA TO HOST INTER-PARLIAMENTARY MEETING ON GENDER EQUALITY

Date:
Thursday, 07 December 2017

KINGSTON, Dec. 7 (JIS):

Jamaica will host the Inter-Parliamentary Meeting on Gender Equality for ParlAmericas’ Anglophone membership in Kingston from January 24 to 25, 2018.

This was disclosed by Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Hon. Olivia Grange, during the 25th anniversary awards luncheon of the Jamaica Women’s Political Caucus held at The Jamaica Pegasus hotel in New Kingston on December 5.

The ParlAmericas Parliamentary Network for Gender Equality (PNGE) promotes women’s political leadership and gender mainstreaming in the agendas and operations of the national legislature of the Americas and the Caribbean.

Minister Grange said the workshop will provide an opportunity for regional parliamentarians, as well as civil society and governmental actors, to engage in dialogue and plan concerted actions to address a priority gender-equality issue in the region.

Since its creation in 2003, the Network (formerly known as the Group of Women Parliamentarians) has carried out activities and initiatives that bring together legislators from across the hemisphere for the exchange of knowledge and good practices to advance women’s rights and gender equality.

Through its inter-parliamentary gatherings, the Network has addressed topics of shared importance, such as women’s economic empowerment, ending gender-based political violence, electoral reforms to promote women’s candidacies, gender-sensitive media and communication, among others.

The outcomes of these activities also inform the development of specialised resources and online communities for parliamentarians.
