GOVERNMENT PROVIDES ADDITION OF $3.68 BILLION TO PATH

KINGSTON, March 10 (JIS):

The Government is providing an increase of 47 per cent to the Programme of Advancement Through Health and Education (PATH), in a move to strengthen the country’s social safety net.

This addition of $3.68 billion in the Budget for the 2017/18 financial year, brings to $11.47 billion the total provision for the programme, which targets some of the most vulnerable segments of the population – children zero to 19 years; the adult poor, including the disabled, elderly, pregnant and lactating mothers, and the destitute.

HEART FOUNDATION WARNS AGAINST HIDING ILLNESSES

The Heart Foundation of Jamaica is warning schools, parents and student athletes not to hide illnesses so that the student can participate in sports. Sports Medicine Specialist and Foundation volunteer, Dr. Paul Wright, told JIS News that the dangerous practice can land students in the hospital or worse. He was speaking against the background of student athletes dying of Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) recently.

ST. RICHARD’S EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION CENTRE EXPANDED

KINGSTON, March 10 (JIS):

The St. Richard’s Early Childhood Education Centre in Kingston has been expanded at a cost of $13.2 million provided by the Culture, Health, Arts, Sports and Education (CHASE) Fund. 

Play equipment was also purchased for the young students.

The two new classrooms and bathroom were dedicated at a ceremony held on March 9.

In his address, Minister of Education, Youth and Information, Senator the Hon. Ruel Reid, commended the school Board and other stakeholders for their effort in catering to the learning needs of the students.

MINISTER SHAW OUTLINES FINANCING OF 2017/18 BUDGET

Finance and the Public Service Minister, Hon. Audley Shaw, says the Government intends to finance the $715.6-billion Budget through a mix of revenue measures, grants, loan resources and inflows from the PetroCaribe Development Fund.

 “Assuming current policies, revenues and grant inflows are estimated at $526.3 billion and consist of tax revenues of $478.9 billion, non-tax revenue of $40 billion, bauxite levy of $0.13 billion, capital revenue of $2.2 billion and grants of $4.4 billion,” he noted.

FINSAC REPORT TO BE AVAILABLE IN SIX MONTHS

            The report from the Financial Sector Adjustment Company (FINSAC) Commission of Enquiry into the collapse of the financial sector is expected to be completed within the next six months.

Minister of Finance and the Public Service, Hon. Audley Shaw, made the disclosure while opening the 2017/18 Budget Debate in the House of Representatives on Thursday (March 9).

GOV’T MAKING BANKING SERVICES MORE ACCESSIBLE

            Finance and the Public Service Minister, Hon. Audley Shaw, says the Government is making banking services more accessible to Jamaicans.

            This is through approval of the Banking Services (Deposit Taking Institutions) (Agent Banking) Regulations in the House of Representatives last year, which allow third-party locations to offer services such as withdrawals, payment of bills and loans, and electronic transfers of funds.

Messages of peace and unity, delivered through music and inspirational speeches, permeated the grounds of Mandela Park in St. Andrew on March 7, at the fourth staging of National Safe Schools’ Peace Day concert.

Scores of persons, including students, gathered at the park for the high-energy concert organised by the Community Safety and Security Branch of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) under the theme ‘Simmer Down! Let’s Talk it Out’.

$68M EU FUNDING SUPPORT FOR CIVIL SOCIETY INITIATIVE

            The European Union (EU) has provided J$68 million (€500,000) in grant funding support towards the two-year Civil Society Boost Initiative (CSBI) being implemented by RISE Life Management Services.

The project aims to increase the capacity of Jamaican civil society organisations (CSOs)/non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to operate effectively and improve service delivery to their target populations.

MINISTRY OF JUSTICE PROMOTING PEACEFUL SOLUTIONS TO DISPUTES

            The Ministry of Justice has embarked on a national drive to promote peaceful solutions to disputes in schools and the wider community.

            Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Carol Palmer, says that the Ministry is increasing the use of non-court initiatives, including mediation and restorative justice practices.
