PM ANNOUNCES NHT GRANTS FOR DISABLED PERSONS

KINGSTON, March 22 (JIS):
Effective July 1, the National Housing Trust (NHT) will provide a grant for mortgagors with disabilities or who reside with and care for family members with disabilities, in a move to meaningfully improve benefits for the disabled.
The grant is to be used to retrofit or upgrade the beneficiary’s dwelling to make it suitable to serve the needs of the disabled person.
This was announced by Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, in his Budget Debate presentation in the House of Representatives on March 21.

GOV’T WORKING TO PROVIDE MORE HOUSING SOLUTIONS – PM

Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, says the Government has been working to provide additional housing solutions for Jamaicans.
This, he said, by ensuring that more persons are able to access financing at lower rates, and that technology and best practices are integrated into construction in order to bring housing to the market at more affordable rates.

CRASH HOTSPOTS TO BE GIVEN SPECIAL ATTENTION

KINGSTON, March 21 (JIS):

            Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, says instructions have been given to the National Works Agency (NWA) to implement safety measures to reduce accidents in crash hotspots.

            “We have given a policy nod to the use of electronic monitoring, electronic surveillance and ticketing systems, and the NWA is now testing various systems to see which is the best to be deployed,” he said.

AGGRESSIVE REFORESTATION PROGRAMME TO BE UNDERTAKEN

The Government is working to ensure that the island’s forest reserves are increased and preserved through an “aggressive” reforestation programme.

Specific focus will be placed on closed broadleaf forests which have been diminishing over the years.

This was disclosed by Minister without Portfolio in the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation, Hon. Daryl Vaz, during a stakeholder consultation on the draft National Forest Management and Conservation Plan (NFMCP), at The Jamaica Pegasus hotel in New Kingston, today (March 21).

NATIONAL CULTURE POLICY TO BE UNVEILED IN APRIL

It is expected that the National Culture Policy will be unveiled next month, articulating clearly what is the Jamaican culture.

Since June 2016, staff of cultural agencies and community members have been participating in islandwide consultations aimed at revising the policy. The consultations are being spearheaded by the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport.

JAMAICANS URGED TO APPRECIATE WORK OF JCF MEMBERS

National Security Minister, Hon. Robert Montague, has urged the nation to be more appreciative of the Jamaica Constabulary Force’s (JCF) role in safeguarding the country’s security.

He made the call while speaking at the presentation ceremony for a Mitsubishi bus, valued at approximately $7.6 million, which the Ministry donated to the Jamaica Police Federation, at the NCB North Tower car park in New Kingston, on March 20.

Mr. Montague noted that the JCF’s members often worked under severe conditions “that leave much to be desired”.

SECURITY MINISTRY AWAITS DESIGNS FOR NEW PICA OFFICE

The National Security Ministry is still awaiting the completion of architectural designs to commence construction of the new Passport, Immigration and Citizenship Agency (PICA) head office in Kingston.

 Portfolio Minister, Hon. Robert Montague, who has responsibility for PICA, says the initial designs are being modified by the architects.

NHT TO COMMENCE MICROFINANCE INITIATIVE APRIL 1

The National Housing Trust (NHT) will on April 1 commence its Housing Microfinance Initiative, which will allow low-income contributors to repair or improve existing homes or build their own homes, one step at a time.

The Initiative, announced by Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, in his Budget Debate presentation in the House of Representatives today (March 21) provides unsecured credit to meet the demands of low-income households.
