MINISTER VAZ COMMITS LAND FOR BAPTIST UNION CASTOR OIL PROJECT

KINGSTON, March 23 (JIS):

            Minister without Portfolio in the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation, Hon. Daryl Vaz, has given a commitment to assist the Jamaica Baptist Union (JBU) with lands for its castor bean project.

            “I am the Minister with responsibility for land (and) where there is land that is unutilised, I will make it available,” he said.

              He was speaking at the official launch of the Grow Castor Bean Project at the Terra Nova All-Suite Hotel in St. Andrew on March 22.

DEFENCE ACT TO BE AMENDED TO ESTABLISH NATIONAL SERVICE CORPS

The Defence Act is being amended to establish the Jamaica National Service Corps within the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF).
The Corps is one of seven under the Government’s Housing, Opportunity, Production and Employment (HOPE) initiative, targeting job and training opportunities for unattached young people aged 19 to 24.

HEALTH MINISTRY LAUNCHES SEALANT PROGRAMME FOR CHILDREN

The Ministry of Health launched its National Sealant Programme on March 21 at the Clan Carthy Primary School in Kingston.

The programme aims to provide access to preventative oral and dental care for primary- and basic-school children in need of these services.

A clinical session facilitated by teams from the Ministry of Health and the University of Technology (UTech) was held at the school.

NO ADDITIONAL BURDEN FROM INDIRECT TAXATION – PM

Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, says the Government’s tax strategy to shift from personal income tax to indirect taxes will not place additional burden on Jamaicans.

He noted, instead, that it will allow citizens to have greater control of their own money, by giving them more of their income to spend and, essentially, enabling them to make wiser decisions about their consumption.

PM TABLES MOCA BILL

The Government has taken another step to strengthen Jamaica’s anti-corruption laws through the tabling of the Major Organised Crime and Anti-Corruption Agency (MOCA) Bill in the House of Representatives on Tuesday (March 21).

It is the second piece of legislation, designed to boost Jamaica’s anti-corruption framework, which the Administration has tabled, following the Integrity Commission Bill two months ago.

GOVERNMENT TO EMBARK ON REGENERATION PROGRAMME

The Government is embarking on an Urban Regeneration Programme for the

re-development of targeted areas in Kingston and St. Andrew.

The programme is being done through the National Housing Trust (NHT), in partnership with the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation, with support from the Urban Development Corporation (UDC) and the National Water Commission (NWC).

CLARENDON COMMUNITIES TO BENEFIT FROM UNDP SUPPORT

            Minister of Transport and Mining, Hon. Mike Henry, has hailed the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for earmarking a number of Clarendon communities for assistance.

            The communities will be receiving development support to lessen the impact of climate change, increase access to water supply, improve agricultural output, and upgrade educational institutions.

NATIONAL CAMPAIGN AGAINST VIOLENCE TO BE LAUNCHED

            A national campaign to promote peace and reduce violence in all its forms will be launched this year.

            This was stated by Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, while making his contribution to the 2017/18 Budget Debate in the House of Representatives on Tuesday (March 21).

He said the move forms part of concrete steps being taken by the Government to reduce the acceptance and use of violence in the country.

SPEED NETWORKING FEATURES NEW INVESTORS

            Head of the Tourism Linkages Network, Carolyn McDonald-Riley, says this year’s staging of the Ministry of Tourism’s Speed Networking will feature new investors to the local tourism industry.

            The investors are scheduled to meet with various stakeholders in the hotel and tourism industry on the day of the event, which is scheduled for March 29, at the Hilton Rose Hall Resort and Spa in St. James.
