SIX JUDGES PROMOTED

KINGSTON, Jan 6. (JIS):

            Six judges have been sworn in to serve in the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court, with effect from January 9.

            The judges are Hon. Justice Carol Edwards to the Court of Appeal; Her Honour Sonia Bertram Linton, His Honour Dale Palmer, Her Honour Calys Wiltshire and Her Honour Lisa Palmer Hamilton as puisne judges in the Supreme Court. Her Honour Yvonne Brown has been appointed Master-in-Chambers of the Supreme Court.

PUBLIC-PRIVATE PARTNERSHIPS NEEDED TO FUND PROJECTS IN HEALTH SECTOR – CMO

KINGSTON, Jan. 6 (JIS):

            Chief Medical Officer in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Winston De La Haye, is underscoring the need for public-private partnerships to provide funding for important projects pertaining to public health.                                      

            Among these is the Jamaica Health and Lifestyle Survey (JHLS) III, now under way, which provides data on chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

The Government is providing funding for JHLS III at a cost of approximately

$95 million.

SDC AND NSWMA LAUDED FOR UNDERTAKING TRANSFORMATIONAL WORK

The Social Development Commission (SDC) and the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) are being hailed for undergoing significant and transformational adjustments to their operations.

The staff were recently congratulated by Local Government and Community Development Minister, Hon. Desmond McKenzie, for their work in transforming the public image of both institutions.

LOCAL GOVERNMENT REPRESENTATIVES URGED TO READ HANDBOOK

Local Government representatives are being urged to familiarise themselves with the latest edition of the councillors handbook, by Minister of Local Government and Community Development, Hon. Desmond McKenzie.

The 300-page handbook, entitled ‘A Guide for Jamaican Councillors’, will be made available to the representatives shortly.

“When you get it, read it, because it is a guide that is useful,” the Minister told the councillors at a sensitisation session held at The Knutsford Court Hotel in Kingston on January 4.

JAMAICANS URGED TO PARTICIPATE IN HEALTH AND LIFESTYLE SURVEY

            Chief Medical Officer (CMO) in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Winston De La Haye, is appealing to Jamaicans to participate in the Jamaica Health and Lifestyle Survey III, which is currently being carried out across the island by the Caribbean Institute for Health Research, in association with the Ministry.                                                            

CONTRACTOR GENERAL EMPHASISES IMPORTANCE OF MANAGING CONFLICT OF INTEREST

            Contractor General, Dirk Harrison, says the effective management of conflict of interest or other perceptions is very crucial to the building of a good public image.

            He points out that conflict of interest, as it relates to public procurement processes, arises when a public official has a private-capacity interest, which could improperly influence the performance of his or her official duties or responsibilities.

ANTI-HARASSMENT DRIVE LAUDED

Chairman of the National Cruise Council (NCC), Michael Belnavis, is lauding the Government’s anti-harassment efforts on the streets of Ocho Rios, noting that there are early indications they have been working.

Mr. Belnavis points to the start of the cruise-shipping season where Ocho Rios has been experiencing an unusual amount of walking traffic from the cruise pier into the main thoroughfare of Main Street, “minus the constant badgering and harassment”.

JUSTICE CENTRES TO BE ESTABLISHED

            Justice Minister, Hon. Delroy Chuck, is moving to have justice centres established in each parish to provide training for Justices of the Peace (JPs) in the areas of restorative justice, mediation and child diversion.

            The objective is to better enable the JPs to peacefully resolve conflicts outside of the court system and promote harmony in communities.
