JOHNSON SMITH IN NEW YORK CITY FOR THE 76TH UNITED NATIONS GENERAL ASSEMBLY; REAFFIRMS JAMAICA’S CONFIDENCE IN MULTILATERALISM
(MFA&FT: September 20, 2021)
Senator the Honourable Kamina Johnson Smith, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, is in New York City to anchor Jamaica’s participation on the ground during this year’s High Level Week. The Jamaica delegation is headed by the Most Honourable Andrew Holness, Prime Minister, who will participate virtually and deliver Jamaica’s Policy Statement.
Minister Johnson Smith explained that, “Jamaica’s participation in this 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) is critical, as it serves as an opportunity to re-affirm our country’s commitment to the multilateral system, which is the foundation for the engagements and dialogue during this period. The UN plays an essential role in coordinating joint responses to global challenges.”
This year’s General Debate will run from 21st to 27th September 2021 on the theme: “Building resilience through hope – to recover from COVID-19, rebuild sustainably, respond to the needs of the planet, respect the rights of people and revitalize the United Nations.”
Minister Johnson Smith will also participate in several high-level engagements within the margins of the UNGA High Level Week, including: the High-Level Meeting to Commemorate the Twentieth Anniversary of the Adoption of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action; the Roundtable Discussion on Closing the Digital Divide; and the 14th Global Governance Group Ministerial Meeting. Minister Johnson Smith will also participate in several regional and bilateral meetings to forge and strengthen new and existing partnerships.
